"Uh, good work Asterix. Sorry, I've got nothin'"

More often that not any video game made from a previously established title or series sucks as hard as possible. Those Wayne's World games are a perfect example of this phenomenon. The late 80's/early 90's were most likely the worst time for this. Some company, usually acclaim (who despite the name generally aren't acclaimed) would buy the rights to use a license, usually The Simpsons, hire the least talented staff available and crank out hundreds of cheesy titles that kids will buy because they already know and love the characters.

Luckily, Asterix is not one of those titles. Developed by Infogrames, a French game company, I'm quite sure this game was a Europe only release, both the Asterix license and the option for multi lingual translation seems to speak for this. Then again, it may just be that Infogrames decided to let those out there who feel more comfortable playing American versions of games in Spanish have their way.

Developed at the very end of the NES's long (some would say overly long) life (1993) Asterix features some of the systems best graphics, in fact they rival many of the first generation SNES titles. More important than graphics, however, is the fact that the video game incarnation of Asterix keeps true to the comic book. You run around, beating up Romans, saving your allies, just like a poorly written Asterix book.

In conclusion, this is a very rare case of a good licensed game. It's old, it's cheap, pick it up.
