Jaguar review

With Ruiner Pinball, Atari attempts to add some spice to the traditional game of ball flipping. In this Pinball "adventure", players must defend their home turf from attack against up to three other players on three different tables. The Ruiner level allows you to change the DEFCON setting from one to five to really pump-up the intensity. Tower Pinball is an even more elaborate triple-length table as you fight against the Sorceress.

The emphasis here isn't as much on ball physics as it is on the various kind of wackiness that are triggered by hitting certain drop chute, or the like. There are plenty of flashing colors, strange noises and over-the-top reactions. In this sense, Ruiner Pinball resembles most 16-bit pinball games like Alien Crush and Crue Ball in that realism is discarded with. It's not such a bad thing if you're only a casual pinball player, but real fans will yearn for more of a simulation for sure.

It's an O.K. game, but not good enough. The stories aren't THAT compelling and the graphics seem washed out and look 16-bittish. And on top of this, it doesn't give the feel of real pinball action, which is too bad given how awful Pinball Fantasies was on the Jaguar.
