"A good intro into the 3d flight sim"
Gunship. A helicopter simulation.
This was released in the later years of the Commodore 64 and it was pretty nice. The most noticeable thing are 3d graphics, or a step into them, on a 2d system. Kind of like Starfox for the SNES. Sure, the graphics are plain ugly, but the feeling of 3d works well!
Graphics - 7/10
Like I said above, the game tries to make 3d from a 2d system and works much like in Starfox for the SNES. The graphics are actually really ugly. A mountain is a grey pyramid, a helipad is a giant H on the ground. While the graphics are bad, they are recognizable. You will know if you are attacking a tank or structure. The reason the graphics don't get like a 2 is because they are revolutionary for the time.
Sound - 6/10
Pretty decent. The sound is beepish, but it suffices. It leaves much to be desired but for the game it works out well. There are no memorable tracks, the sound that is in it just ends up being background music.
Gameplay - 10/10
Real in-depth. The game comes with a paper foldout that lays over the keyboard which shows what buttons do what, such as arm Hellfires or stop rotation or bring up radar. The game is actually very well simulated. There are tons of things that you have no idea what they do, but they do something. Its similar to Microsoft's Flight Simulator. It works out very well though and it feels like you fly a helicopter.
Missions range from many things. You might have to land on a helipad or fire at an enemy tank. Little things too make the game enjoyable. For instance, before each mission, you have 6 or so empty slots on your chopper for things like Hellfire missiles, fuel, or gun ammo, and much more. You have to decide what to load up with, where it goes, and make sure that you stay under the weight limit. This game is real in-depth, detailed, and enjoyable because of things like that which make it more realistic to the actual thing.
Overall - 9/10
All in all, the game is pretty nice. Actually, its great. Even up to this day, I have never seen a helicopter flight simulation this well placed together. The only problem are outdated graphics, but graphics don't make the game. I recommend this one if you own a Commodore 64. Download it, buy it, or whatever. It's so old im sure you can buy it cheap!
