"Rule the world! Well, the Americas..."
Introduction
Colonization was always over-shadowed by Civilization, and this was rather unfair. Civilization is a wonderful game, but that's for another review. Colonization is vaguely similar to Civilization but only with regard to the style of the game. The content is vastly different.
In short, this is a simulation/strategy game where the object is to successfully settle in the new world and eventually achieve independence. The game tries to keep as close to being historically accurate as possible, and largely it succeeds (although it is simplified for obvious reasons). This is a forgotten classic of sim gaming, and for fans of the genre will certainly not disappoint.
Story - 7/10
The premise is that you are a conquering nation embarking on the exploration and colonization (hence the title) of the ''New World''. You must set off from your European nation of choice and explore the territory, building settlements and making discoveries as you go.
The story in this game is pure history. The whole game is based loosely on fact. The map of the New World is accurate and the nations act roughly as their historical counterparts did - the Spanish conquer, the French befriend the local population, and so on. You choose a nation at the start of the game, and your chosen nationality is reflected throughout as you progress, thus making the whole experience more fulfilling.
Graphics and Sound - 6/10
Of course, writing this review today, the score is affected by the fact that I'm so spoilt by playing games on the latest consoles now. But at the time, the graphics were good, but nothing out of the ordinary. Sound quality is mediocre, even for its time.
Gameplay - 8/10
This is very well engineered and really flawless. You must achieve a balance, taking care of all aspects of your settlements in order to succeed at this game. The establishment of trade routes is mandatory in order to survive financially. The ultimate objective is to successfully achieve independence from your original nation.
It's the small details that really make Colonization a success. From meeting the locals, who may give tributes to you sometimes, or who may be hostile to you if they don't like the look of you; to finding that the map and terrain are exactly as they are in the real New World and therefore you can find your way around a little; Colonization is a delight to play.
Replay Value - 8/10
There are four different nations which you can choose from at the start, all with different strengths and weaknesses built into the game. This offers immense replay value, particularly as the rest of the game will be completely different each time you play it.
The Bottom Line
Colonization is a top quality game that really deserves a remake. If you can get hold of it by whatever means, then I recommend doing so.
