(Anonymous) (Unknown) 7th Nov 2012 02:48Arcus Odyssey is an isometric action role-playing game for the Genesis system. The game is part of the Arcus series of Japanese computer games, but only Arcus Odyssey was made available in North America. This game is a side story and was released between Arcus 2 and 3. It is a top down action RPG, while the original game was a first person RPG, and the second game was a traditional turn based JRPG. The game features a co-op mode in which two players can play through the game together.
While the game is billed as an action RPG, it has a heavy focus on action and not many RPG elements. It is commonly compared to Gauntlet.
The game primarily has an isometric view, although the player's characters can move freely in eight directions. After defeating most bosses, players receive a power boost; this boost either gives them more health or more power.
In Arcus Odyssey, the sorceress Castomira was sealed away by a magic sword forged by the granddaughter of the Knight of Light, Leaty. 1000 years later, the sword entitled "The Power of Leaty" is stolen from the King of Acus by Castomira's followers. The four warriors, Jedda the Swordsman, Diana the Archer, Erin the Warrior-Maiden, and Bead the Mage, set off to stop her resurrection.
The player can choose one of four heroes, each with their own strength, weaknesses and abilities.
Jedda starts with 6 health and has a stoneskin spell which halves the damage he takes, as well as several fire spells. His attacks are short range, but do a fair amount of damage.
Diane starts with 6 health and several archery spells, as well as a healing spell. She has the longest range, but the weakest attack.
Erin starts with 7 health and has an anti-poison spell, as well as several energy spells. She has a short sword which does strong damage and can perform a spin attack.
Bead starts with 5 health and has a cure silence spell, as well as some lightning spells. His basic attacks are strong elemental based attacks with a long range.
The game features 8 acts with bosses and sub bosses, and a total of 13 stages. Friendly characters can be found in each stage, which can provide the player with helpful information and, on rare occasions, accompany the player through the stage as well.
After each completed act, the player will have 3 health restored; they will also earn a health increase for each 10,000 points earned.
The player can move in 8-directions, attack, defend with a shield, and use items or magic. Stages are littered with chests which can provide the player with more spells or items. Some stages have sub-objectives, which must be completed before moving onto the next area.
The game uses a password system to allow players to continue at the act they left off on.
The music for Arcus Odyssey was composed by Motoi Sakuraba, who is best known for the music in the Star Ocean series.
A US version for the Super NES was developed but cancelled following Sega's acquisition of the American publisher Renovation Products. (American publisher for Wolf Team and Telenet games). The Super Famicom version was released in Japan with the title Arcus Spirits.
